Background
Nepal’s disease burden is changing as incidence of non-communicable diseases has risen and is expected to increase further in the near future. It is learnt that the incidence of type 2 diabetes in Nepal varied substantially between urban and rural areas. The prevalence is high in urban areas. In urban areas, many do not sustain the recommended level of physical activity, particularly women. Most physical activity is related to work or occupational activities, but work activities that are physically demanding, such as agriculture, are also decreasing. In the context of traditionally urban Nepal, physically active leisure-time activities, such as sports and exercise, are associated more frequently with youth or modern culture. With an increasing awareness of the importance of addressing type 2 diabetes and other NCDs in Nepal it is important that research is conducted on the barriers and motivators for healthy lifestyles to inform an integrated approach to reducing and preventing type 2 diabetes.
